Bowls Victory For Swanmead

The second annual Bowls match took place last week between Maiden Beech, Crewkerne and Swanmead Community School in Ilminster. Children aged from 10 to 13 took part following a number of coaching sessions at their respective clubs.

Swanmead pupils have been attending sessions at the Ilminster Bowling Club where they have been coached by Louis Ridout who works at the school and is a current England player. The Maiden Beech team have visited the Severalls Jubilee Bowling Club where they have been tutored by Hilary and Ken Leamon plus Harry Black (all coaches from the club). Both groups were escorted by SSCO Bob Brunt.

The pupils showed how well they have listened and practised with a good standard of play throughout the afternoon. Maiden Beech were behind on both rinks. In the end Swanmead won by 18 shots to 12.

A presentation followed as past Committee members Pru and Ken Robbins have donated a cup to be competed for each year by the two schools. The Robbins Cup was presented to the victorious Swanmead team by the Robbins family in front of more than twenty spectators from both towns. Many adults commented how nice it was to see children playing with no arguing and lots of encouragement for their team members.

Quad-kids Athletics Festival at Holyrood

Holyrood School played host to the first ‘Quad-kids Athletics Festival on Friday 9th July. The Rotary Club of Chard had the idea and supported the event with planning, administrative work, collation of results and officials.

Four Primary Schools were involved this year: Thorncombe, Chard Independent, Ashill and Buckland and it is hoped that this will be expanded upon in future years.

Over 60 pupils were involved, each competing in four events; 75m sprint, 600m, long jump and vortex howler throw. Medals and certificates were awarded to the top 3 pupils in each of Years 4, 5 and 6. Events like this enable Primary Schools to deliver part of the National Sport’s Strategy – and in this instance ‘competition’ against other schools.

The event was ably assisted by students from Year 10 at Holyrood, who measured and timed.

The winning school overall, Thorncombe, were presented with a shield.

Holyrood School Sport’s Co-ordinator, Jason Hedaux, would like to extend a very big ‘thank-you’ to the Rotary Club for all their hard work – a fantastic event – well done!

Wadham Boys in FA National Futsal Festival, Sheffield

On the weekend of the 3rd/4th July, Wadham Yr 9 boys represented the Partnership and the South West of England at the National Futsal Festival, at the amazing Institute of Sports Facility at Don Valley Sheffield.

Futsal is a relatively new sport to Britain, of indoor 5-a-side football. It has been played in South America and Europe for some time. The English FA are now promoting it as a key part of developing football through skills games. Played with a low bounce ball and on a basketball court it is fast and high scoring.

The Wadham boys, playing in the Under 14 section, played 4 games in one of 2 groups playing teams from North London, Northampton, Walsall and Sheffield. All the games proved to be very closely fought affairs with Wadham in the stronger of the 2 groups.

The boys drew one and lost 3 of their games. The 2 teams qualifying from the group eventually met in the final with the Northampton school winning.

The Wadham boys had a great time and although didn’t win, played with much skill and were a credit to their school and region. The boys are now going to set up their own Futsal League back at school in the Autumn term.

Westfield Cluster take part in National School Sport Week

National School Sports Week saw lots of action going on in the Westfield Cluster of Schools.

Westfield School ran a Skipping Challenge, Table Tennis Competition, 5-a-side Football Tournament, Basketball Shoot Out, Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, Non Stop Cricket, Athletics and Softball activities. On the Friday students experienced a highly charged day of Brazilian Dance.

The school also hosted a Mini Olympics for Year 2 pupils from its feeder Cluster schools. This was run by the new Sports Prefects with nearly 200 pupils coming to the school. The pupils were divided into eight teams each representing a different country. The boys and girls did eight different athletics challenges scoring bronze, silver and gold points for their performances. These were added up with the winning country being announced. An excellent afternoon of athletics was had by all with the Westfield Prefects doing an excellent job of coaching and officiating.

The Primary Schools also were active in the National School Sports Week doing some good, new, challenging activities. Sports Prefects from Westfield ran a day of Tri Golf for Key Stage 2 pupils at Oaklands.

At Huish and East Coker Primary Schools sessions of Dance Mats throughout the week were enjoyed by many pupils.

National Award Winner at Sexey’s School

Robbie Carrick-Smith, a Year 9 pupil from Sexey’s School, Bruton, received a silver medal in the 200m at Blackpool in the National Disabled Athletics Competition held on 4th & 5th July.

Robbie also had a fourth place in the shot and gained a place in the 100m final.

Primary Swimming Festival for Chard Primary Cluster

On Tuesday 6th July, Chard area cluster of primary schools held its annual swimming festival under the slightly different guise of an Aqua-splash Festival.

The event, which focuses more on water confidence and team building rather than a traditional swimming gala, was hosted at the Cresta Kingfisher Pool. Participating schools were: Ashill, Avishayes, Buckland, Manor Court, Neroche, Redstart and Tatworth.

A total of 52 local primary pupils took part in 4 exciting events, and points were awarded to finishing positions in each event.
Two schools scored equal points and were joint overall winners: Buckland and Tatworth with 290 points.

Events, like these, are just one way of providing children with competitive situations – something that all schools are working towards under the National Strategy for PE and Sport.School Sports Co-ordinator, Jason Hedaux, would like to thank Cresta, Alex Pinniger, and Chard Swimming Club, for providing valuable young helpers, all of whom helped in the running of this successful event.

King Arthur’s takes part in National School Sports Week

King Arthur’s School participated in The Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week from the 28th June to 2nd July. The national event was a week-long sporting celebration for primary and secondary schools.

On Monday and Tuesday, 28th and 29th June, Years 7,8,9 pupils came off timetable to opt into the 10 different sports available: Spinning, Aerobics, Karate, Cheerleading, Athletics, Rock-it-ball, Golf, Archery, Futsal and Rugby.
The aim of the two days was to raise the profile of sport among students at KA. In addition KA wanted to promote new sports whilst reinforcing and developing new club links. Wincanton Golf Club, Wincanton Sports Centre and Yeovil Olympiads were among a few clubs that provided coaches for the two days.

King Arthur’s students then enjoyed two more days of sunshine and sport competing in their annual sports days against each other across a vast range of sports.
The Olympic Values of respect, fair play and excellence were encouraged throughout the week.

The week of sport closed with the Top Link Festival for King Arthur’s School partner feeder schools. KA student Sports Leaders pledged and ran a successful athletics and rounders festival for 150 Key Stage 2 pupils. The team of 20 leaders was managed by 5 of the best leaders from Year 10. Amy Chick, Matt Viola, Kerry Stone, Michael Brook and John O’Rourke.

Despite a wet morning, where the leaders had to adapt their plans to accommodate the athletics inside, all students and staff had enjoyed a splendid and well managed morning. At 12.30pm the whole country participated in 3 minutes of sporting activity, Matt Viola managed to lead over 150 pupils, leaders and teachers skipping for 3 minutes in the sports hall.
The day brightened up and the Rounders Tournament was able to run outside in the afternoon. Close matches were fought for both Years 3/4 and 5/6 age groups, however Horsington proved victors on the day!

Quad Kids Event at Holy Trinity as part of the National School Sports Week

10 primary schools entered the Quad Kids event with over 90 Key Stage 1 boys and girls. This event encourages pupils to participate in 4 athletic events:- 50m sprint, vortex howler throws, standing long jump and 300m run plus a relay.

The results were taken, inputted into a spreadsheet and then at the end of the event, individual places could be determined and the overall winning school’s result shown.

Ash were the overall winners who received a cup sponsored by Lloyd’s TSB National School Sports Week, a gym sack and a cap.

18 Leaders from Holy Trinity’s Year 6 class helped to make this event run smoothly.
Many thanks go to the parents for bringing the children and making this a fantastic event. The weather also helped!

Young gymnasts spring into their first competition!

Forty six children from schools throughout South Somerset had their first taste of competitive gymnastics in the South Somerset Key Step Gymnastics Championships, held at ‘Orchard Gymnastics’ in Yeovil on Sunday 13th June.

Teams from Birchfield Primary, Oaklands Primary, MIlford Infants, South Petherton Infants, Pen Mill Infants and Curry Mallet Primary Schools competed routines on Floor and Vault in a very close fought competition which finished with South Petherton being crowned champions, Curry Mallet taking silver and Birchfield bronze. Pictured below are South Petherton.

The competition came at the end of a programme of gymnastics coaching delivered to schools by coaches from ‘Orchard Gymnastics’ and funded by South Somerset District Council and South East Somerset School Sports Partnership. Below is a photo of all the medalists.

The programme delivered has been successful in leaving not only the children but also their teachers confident in participating in this grass roots level of gymnastics. The competition and the opportunity for the children to compete in such a fantastic gymnastics facility proved a real climax. All gymnasts are pictured below.

Director of coaching Barry Phelan said “The atmosphere in the gym today has been fantastic and the standard of gymnastics very impressive. A really positive experience for all involved”.

Partnership KWIK Cricket Tournament a Big Hit!

On Friday 11th June the Partnership Tournament took place at the superb venue of the North Perrott Cricket Club, near Crewkerne. A record number of schools took part in the Year 6 Tournament for Under 11 teams.

The morning saw the teams battle in the group phase of the Tournament. The top 3 group Winners played off and subsequent 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed teams going into the Plate Competitions from each group, played off to see who came 1st, 2nd and 3rd. In the Winners Group victors were Milford Juniors with Tatworth as Runners Up. These two schools now go through to the County Finals to represent the Partnership.

In the Year 5 and Girls Tournaments, 4 schools contested in both competitions. Each school playing each other twice throughout the day. In the Year 5 Tournament for Under 10s, Ash were winners and Preston runners up.

In the Girls, East Coker triumphed with Tatworth finishing as runners up. They too will go through to their respective County Finals.

Excellent cricket was played throughout the day. Our aim for next Year is to get more Girls and Year 5 pupils playing. Thanks to all who took part and umpired and a big Thank You to North Perrot Cricket Club for the use of their facilities.
