King Arthur’s takes part in National School Sports Week

King Arthur’s School participated in The Lloyds TSB National School Sport Week from the 28th June to 2nd July. The national event was a week-long sporting celebration for primary and secondary schools.

On Monday and Tuesday, 28th and 29th June, Years 7,8,9 pupils came off timetable to opt into the 10 different sports available: Spinning, Aerobics, Karate, Cheerleading, Athletics, Rock-it-ball, Golf, Archery, Futsal and Rugby.
The aim of the two days was to raise the profile of sport among students at KA. In addition KA wanted to promote new sports whilst reinforcing and developing new club links. Wincanton Golf Club, Wincanton Sports Centre and Yeovil Olympiads were among a few clubs that provided coaches for the two days.

King Arthur’s students then enjoyed two more days of sunshine and sport competing in their annual sports days against each other across a vast range of sports.
The Olympic Values of respect, fair play and excellence were encouraged throughout the week.

The week of sport closed with the Top Link Festival for King Arthur’s School partner feeder schools. KA student Sports Leaders pledged and ran a successful athletics and rounders festival for 150 Key Stage 2 pupils. The team of 20 leaders was managed by 5 of the best leaders from Year 10. Amy Chick, Matt Viola, Kerry Stone, Michael Brook and John O’Rourke.

Despite a wet morning, where the leaders had to adapt their plans to accommodate the athletics inside, all students and staff had enjoyed a splendid and well managed morning. At 12.30pm the whole country participated in 3 minutes of sporting activity, Matt Viola managed to lead over 150 pupils, leaders and teachers skipping for 3 minutes in the sports hall.
The day brightened up and the Rounders Tournament was able to run outside in the afternoon. Close matches were fought for both Years 3/4 and 5/6 age groups, however Horsington proved victors on the day!

Somerset Schools Futsal Festivals

On Tuesday 20th April and Thursday 22nd April the Somerset Schools Futsal Festivals were hosted at Buckler’s Mead School, Yeovil. Co-ordinated by Somerset FA and supported by the South East Somerset Schools Sport Partnership the event saw schools from all over the south of the County compete at U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s. It was a brilliant two days of competitive Futsal as the winners of the 3 older age groups will now go on to represent Somerset at the Regional FA Youth Futsal Qualifier next month.

UNDER 10s – In a group of 5 primary school teams some excellent Futsal was played with several young players standing out and looking very composed as Futsal players. In the first few games Milford Junior School set the early running winning 2 of their 4 games moving onto 6 points. Close behind them was Maiden Beech who drew 1 and won 2 of their first 3 games. The other 3 schools, Swanmead, Martock and East Coker battled hard beating each other which cost them as they were effectively competing for 3rd place. In the deciding match between Milford and Maiden Beech sharp and effective Futsal was on show. Milford went ahead early on and kept their noses ahead leading 3-2 at the half way stage of the game. However, in the last few minutes Maiden Beech got back into the game and went onto seal a 5-3 victory. This was enough for Maiden Beech who found themselves on 10 points and although Milford won their last game against East Coker they were left one point short on 9. Overall the competition was a success and it is hoped the schools continue to play as they seemed to enjoy playing Futsal. We wish Maiden Beech all the best in the Regional Qualifier.

UNDER 12s – With 6 schools going for the win this was always going to be a tight competition. In group 1 Buckler’s Mead, Martock and Swanmead all won 1 game and lost the other with Swanmead and Buckler’s Mead progressing through to the semi finals on goal difference. In group 2 Maiden Beech topped the group with 2 strong wins,with King Arthur’s finishing 2nd. In the first playoff match Milford Junior beat Martock in a close game that only opened up in the last few minutes when Milford scored three late goals.

In the first semi final Buckler’s Mead went down 2-1 to Maiden Beech. In a tense game both teams had few chances but Maiden Beech sneaked through with a late winner. In the other semi final King Arthur’s were too strong for Swanmead and progressed fairly comfortably. The final saw King Arthur’s play Maiden Beech for the 2nd time. In the group stage Maiden Beech won a close game and this was no different. Maiden Beech played some attacking Futsal and King Arthur’s soaked up the pressure before they scored a goal on the break either side of half time to win the u12s title.

UNDER 14s – With Buckler’s Mead, Wadham and King Arthur’s going for the win in a small group every game was going to be crucial. In the first game Wadham beat King Arthur’s 2-0 in a close game that took a stunning free kick and a late strike to win the game for Wadham. In the 2nd game Wadham played Buckler’s Mead just needing a point to finish in the top two but Buckler’s Mead played some great Futsal winning the match 6-2. In the final group game King Arthur’s needed to beat Buckler’s by more than 2 goals to progress but they couldn’t as Buckler’s Mead went onto win 6-0 setting up a final with Wadham. In a much closer and dramatic final Buckler’s scored early, inside the first minute. Wadham then composed themselves and went 2-1 up. Buckler’s pushed forward and scored an equaliser with only 2 minutes to go and even hit the bar but the game ended and went to penalties. With the first 8 penalties all scored it was effectively sudden death. Buckler’s 5th penalty taker hit the post and Wadham scored the decisive spot kick to claim an amazing victory.

UNDER 16s – With just two teams in the competition Buckler’s Mead played a 3 legged match against King Arthur’s. In a physical first game with only a few moments of magic both teams played out a 2-2 draw. In the second game Buckler’s stepped up their performance and ran out into a 2-0 lead only to concede late on. Going into the final match Buckler’s were 4-3 up. Buckler’s then extended the lead by scoring first before King Arthur’s started their come back. In the last 5 minutes they scored 3 times to go ahead 6-5 and win the U16s competition. As the matches progressed the Futsal improved and by the end some quality goals were scored.

Both days ran smoothly and thanks must go to Buckler’s Mead School for hosting the event, to the schools who took part and their teachers and finally to the staff of Somerset FA who officiated and supported the festivals. We now wish good luck to Maiden Beech and King Arthur’s U12s and U16s in the Regional Qualifier next month. We also hope Futsal continues to grow in Somerset and that next year the Festivals will grow again

Tag to Twickenham Finals

A full compliment of 16 primary schools turned up to Somerton on Friday 26th March, all eager to win one of the two coveted places in the County Championships at Wells RFC in May.

Not every Primary school can boast a rugby playing teacher, so this year a number of very large players were seen running around during the warm ups and in between games. Higher Diploma students from both Strode and Yeovil FE Colleges turned up to support the event as part of their community service. In addition to taking charge of the timing and smooth running of the actual final programme, many also became team manager and coach for the afternoon.

The young primary school pupils definitely benefited from not only having young enthusiastic support, but also gained from the passing, attacking and defending skills that the Young Leaders passed on.

All teams played 3 games each in 4 different pools, where most results went down to the final match before an overall winner emerged; the semi finals were contested by Hambridge vs Curry Mallet and North Cadbury vs Milborne Port. These were refereed by Bruce Weddell, who was supporting the event on behalf of Somerton Rugby Club, and Will Hopkinson from Yeovil College, who won the praise of many parents and staff for his approach to refereeing young players.

These matches were played with good passion and commitment, by young players who were beginning to feel the effects of the 4th match. Miborne Port won their game after a brief period of extra time to meet Hambridge in the final

Speed and agility won the day for Hambridge. Their young players were still full of running and they made the most of a couple of missed tags to run in the eventual winners. We wish both Hambridge and Milborne Port the best of luck in the next round.

Young Leaders Training

28 year 5 and 6 primary school pupils attended a Young Leaders course at Wincanton Sports Ground on September 18th.

The aim was to develop leaders who could organise activities in school playgrounds during break times, therefore keeping pupils engaged and active.

The course equipped them with skills and ideas on the role of a leader, planning and organising activities and developed their communication skills.

All who attended passed the course with flying colours and we look forward to seeing them leading in their various playgrounds.

Year 7 FUN Festival starts the year off

40 year 7 King Arthurs’ pupils were involved in a joint year 7 FUN festival with Ansford School on Thursday 1st October

Many pupils played new activities for the first time, such as Ultimate Frisbee, Rock-it-Ball, Table Tennis and Handball.

The aim of the festival was to socialise with pupils from their year group and with a neighbouring school, to try out different sports; and most importantly to have fun.

8 JSLA pupils from King Arthurs supported the event by helping with equipment, coaching and refereeing, all pupils were buzzing with enthusiasm and went home on a high.

National Sports Week at King Arthurs

King Arthurs Sports College fully supported the National Sport Week 29th June till 3rd July bu offering all its pupils in Key Stage 3 nine different activities to choose from for a morning of alternative sports.

King Arthurs brought in additional outside coaches helping to motivate pupils and fulfil objectives for PE and School Sport using the inspiration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and values.

The range of activities were: spinning, disc sports, golf, handball, water polo, rugby challenges, street dance, stretch ‘n’ flex and street soccer. Street soccer was provided by ex student Kierhan Ellis and his company Elite Street who brough a cage for students to show off their new skills. Other external coaches were for street dance, stretch ‘n’ flex, spinning and disc sports. Spinning has recently started at Wincanton Sports Centre and was provided by their instructors. In addition Justin French from Wincanton Rugby came into deliver a set of rugby challenges.

Â To help promote and advertise the week, year 10 Young Ambassadors Ashley Merrit and Annalise Salter delivered an assembly to over 300 pupils and staff in the lower school. Furthermore, Ashley delivered the water polo sessions using his GB playing experience. In lineÂ with the National School Sport week objectives, JSLA students pledged and delivered lunchtime clubs, passing on their knowledge to pupils in the lower school.

King Arthurs pupils loved the experience making the following comments: Ellie: I think we should have it now in our curriculum like water polo. Katie: Really good to be able to chose our own activities. Katie P: Great as we got to work with people who like the same sports, but we don’t normally work with. Jack: Street soccer was sweet! We loved the cage for showing off new tricks. Charlie: It was nice to do girls rugby and try different sports. Sarah: The schools had a really energetic feel to it, like a buzz feeling! Alice: Spinning was awesome, I’m not going to join the club.

End of year Multi Skills Festival held at King Arthur’s School

Many of the local primary schools have successfully trained staff through the School Sports Partnership to deliver Multi Skills Clubs for their Year 1/2 pupils.

Those pupils that attend the clubs are then invited to an end of year Multi Skills Festival at King Arthur’s School run by new Year 9 Leaders.

The Festival caters for 120 pupils and centres around the ABC of PE; Agility, Balance & Coordination. The primary school children have a go at 21 different challenging activities and have a whale of a time with 28 King Arthur’s leaders looking after their every need.

Again this year the Festival was a great success with those staff attending being thoroughly impressed with the organisation and the standard of the KA leaders. The Sports Hall very quickly turned from a quiet, cool place to a hot, sweaty, exciting hive of activity!

The Final Year 4 Playday of the Year Takes Place

The final Year 4 Playday of the year went ahead last friday with around 80 pupils attending from King Arthur’s cluster of primary schools.

The 3 aims of the day were firstly, and most importantly, to have FUN, secondly to experience 8 different sporting activities with various local club coaches delivering sessions ranging from Karate to Rugby, and finally to make friends from other local primary schools.

The pupils revisited these aims at the end of the day and the voting was unanimous, showing that the day had met all its aims with an added bonus of creating 80 much more confident and noisy individuals.

A big thank you goes to Ian Summers of South Cheriton Football Club, Justin French of Wincanton Rugby Club, Paul Hacker of Wincanton Karate Club, Charlotte MacCaw of Wincanton Tennis Club, and Di Vincent local Badminton Coach. A big thank you also goes to the 8 budding new Year 9 King Arthur’s Leaders, who all gave up their time to make the day a real success!

Year 3/4 Mini Reds Tennis Initiative at Wincanton proves very successful

The Year 3/4 Mini Reds Tennis Initiative launched by the LTA, and run by Wincanton Tennis Club for the local primary schools, has proved to be a roving success.

Charlotte MacCaw and Alexia Price from the Club have been providing coaching for identified local pupils for the pastÂ six weeks. Pupils were then invited to the Wincanton Tennis Club, based at the Wincanton Sports Ground, for a closely matched competition.

Both singles & doubles matches were organised with pupils applying the skills, techniques and knowledge of rules learnt over the preceeding weeks. Eight King Arthur’s pupils who were trained as Tennis Leaders were at hand to officiate and help organise.

The morning was a great success and all involved could see the improvements made by pupils during the course of the Tennis Initiative.

STRETCH N’ FLEX SUCCESS

King Arthur’s have been looking to increase the participation of girls in sports clubs at school. Results from the Key Stage 3 girls’ questionnaire indicated a desire for more activities for the non games players.

Sue Fox-Willis from Stretch ‘n’ Flex, provided the Year 8 and 9 girls with taster sessions in their lessons of Stretch ‘n’ Flex. This is a mixture of Pilates, Yoga and Tai Chi to music.

The response to these sessions has been fantastic, with over 50 girls from the two year groups signing up. The first session saw 38 girls enjoy a new activity, and leave the session buzzing.

Many of the girls who took part have not previously taken part in extra curricular physical activity. When leaving Tuesday’s first session a handful of girls gave their comments:
“Its just what we needed”
“Its so different from our normal sports”
“Being girls only, made us feel a bit more confident about it”
“She (Sue Fox-Willis) was really encouraging and enthusiastic. That made it fun!”
