U16 Basketball Thriller
March 9th, 2010![]() |
Huish and Bucklers Mead’s U16 boys contested the second of the Partnership Basketball Finals on Tuesday 24th Feb, which proved to be a very even and tight match. |
| Buckler’s Mead once again stepped in to host an event, following the lack of availability of facilities at Yeovil College. The event was supported by Gary Carter, Somerset’s Basketball Development Officer, who also umpired the event alongside Bill Whistlecroft, still going strong on the referee circuit after many great years of support to local sport. |
| This was a match that started closely contested and finished on a knife edge where the match result could have gone either way. Huish scored first while the teams settled down into their various attack and defence routines until Ablett put Buckler’s ahead with the only 3 pointer of the match.
Leading up to half time, Stocker and Davidson had managed to keep Huish just one point behind Buckler’s at 15-16, with Athersuch and Ablett scoring most of the home team points. |
| The second half tipped off in much the same way as the first, with every rebound hotly contested and both teams looking to maximise their possession. With some players getting close to their 5 foul limits there were fewer interruptions and some more cautious play. However, the competition was as tight as ever with the score changing hand regularly and being moved along continually by some fine work around the basket by Hoare for Buckler’s and Youe who supported the scoring efforts of his team mates from Huish. With just under 5 minutes to go Huish nudged in front and had to endure a final 2 point penalty attempt in the last 15 seconds which would have seen Buckler’s draw level. But the match didn’t go into extra time and Huish came away with a 38-36 point victory. |
