Competition
Welcome to the competitions page for the South East Somerset SSP.
There are two competition managers in Somerset, and we are responsible for managing a gradual and long term programme of change for competition within schools and the wider community.
National Frameworks
The programme is based on the national competition frameworks for young people, where we are responsible for working in partnership in order to increase pupil participation in inter- school competitions and achieve the objectives of the 5 hour offer.
One of our main roles is to make sure that all pupils, of whatever standard of play or ability, have the opportunity to take part in competition that is appropriate to their needs. This includes pupils and students who might not be in the school first team but who enjoy taking part in sport and who could become more physically involved given the right opportunity.
These opportunities will come about when school staff are supported with competitions that make the best use of time and resources and provide access to a variety of sports at different levels.

Community links
In addition, a major part of our role is to make sure that the delivery of school competitions is integrated with community provision; the eventual aim being to ensure that school pupils are directed to the player pathway at a level that suits their ability.
National strategy links
We also work to ensure that the competition programme is effectively linked with other strands of the PESSYP strategy and other relevant national programmes such as:
- Gifted and Talented
- Club Links (NGB club development/partnership work)
- Coaching
- Disability
- Leadership and Volunteering
