Community Clubs
There is already a great deal of coaching activity happening in our schools which is increasing participation across the Partnership. However to make this truly sustainable another key area of our work is the development of links with Community Clubs. Close liaison with South Somerset District Council (SSDC) and Mendip Discrict Council is helping to support this process.
Regular meetings with sport specific groups, Club Link Agreement forms, and School to Club Link Champions are all aspects of the work which ensures that Partnership aims are addressed and more Young People have the opportuntiy to bridge the gap between school and community activity.
Sport Specific Group Meetings
These are run by SSDC in a variety of sports selected as part of their Sport and Leisure Strategy. Disucssion focusses on issues such as membership, competition, club mark, funding and increasing capacity and serves as an excellent medium to raise awareness and interest in the work of the Partnership. A club link resource pack has been developed to inform partners of the background and benefits to linking with schools.

School to Club Link Agreement forms
These are used initially to generate dialogue between schools and clubs. They then serve as agreements and reminders to all parties regarding how the link is working and can be developed further.

School to Club Champions Scheme
We understand that a major problem with clubs committing to links is finding the right people from the club to come to schools to promote activity and possibly run sessions. Work commitments regularly cause difficulties, especially given the times that schools might need support. The ‘familiar face’ is essential to encourage young people to come to a club however so to address this we have decided to use the young people themselves! As members of clubs already who may also be following a leadership award, they are nominated and if suitable given the status of School to Club ‘Champion’. A work programme is then drawn up which will focus on attracting more pupils from their school to join the club. Close collaboration between the ‘Champion’, SSCo and Club must take place at first to ensure the scheme is a success and beneficial to all concerned. On completion of their first 6 weeks, the ‘Champion’ then receives a reward pack as a thank you for their efforts. It is hoped however that they will then sustain their ‘Champion’ involvement and continue to actively promote the club in their school.
